Host: Dr. Lin-Wen Hu (胡玲文) NE (核工) 1989
Director, Research and Services at the MIT Nuclear Reactor Laboratory
Topic: Data-Driven Pandemic Management
Since the outbreak of Covid-19 at the end of 2019, little consolidated effort has been taken to deal with the pandemic worldwide. In this talk, we discuss expected losses from pandemic outbreaks and nuclear power plant accidents, together with environmental pollution. Early simulation of possible scenarios can reduce global losses both health-wise and economically. Reliability assessment is to be learned for dealing with major global disasters.
Way Kuo, 1972NE graduate at National Tsing Hua University, is a Member of US National Academy of Engineering and Academia Sinica in Taiwan.
He is renowned for his pioneering work in design for reliability, including electronics and energy systems. He was on the Senior Management team of Oak Ridge National Laboratory and served as Dean of Engineering at the University of Tennessee before he was appointed President of City University of Hong Kong in 2008.
Under his leadership, CityU is ranked 48th in the world by the QS World University Rankings 2021 and is widely considered among the most progressive universities in this century.
Since July 2020, he has received invitations to write editorials for technical journals and delivered keynote video-speeches in Italy, Canada, and France to treat the Covid-19 crisis as a systems problem by taking lessons from the operation of nuclear power plants.
